FAA Requirements to obtain your A&P Certification

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for an A&P mechanic certification, applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Be proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English
• Successfully complete all required examinations within a 24-month timeframe
• Meet the specific requirements for the certification or rating they are pursuing

Individuals seeking an additional rating must also fulfill the necessary experience and testing requirements outlined by the FAA within a 24-month period.

Experience Requirements

Candidates must demonstrate hands-on experience in aviation maintenance through one of the following pathways:

• Completion of an approved aviation maintenance technician school program
• Documented work experience in aircraft maintenance, with:
  • A minimum of 18 months specializing in either Airframe or Powerplant maintenance
  • At least 30 months of combined experience covering both Airframe and Powerplant maintenance

Military Experience Consideration

Those with military aviation maintenance experience may be eligible for certification based on their service history. Veterans and active service members should verify their qualifications with the FAA and provide documentation, such as DD-214 forms and performance records, to confirm their experience meets certification standards.
